Atomic Habits: Chapter Two

Changing a habit becomes problematic because we either try to change the wrong thing or we try to change the habits the wrong way. Motivation may lead to the development of a habit but maintaining it will stem from it becoming part of your identity.

Progress involves unlearning some bad habits that you may have picked up. We are what we do. Changing our behavior changes our identity which requires that we constantly edit and expand our beliefs.

Habits yield results that teach us a very vital lesson that we can trust ourselves, to accomplish the things we want. We are not perfect, somedays may be bad days where we achieve less than what we desire but the goal is to ensure that most days are good.

A two-step process to change

  1. Decide the person you want to be

  2. Prove it to yourself with small wins.

It may seem easy to focus on the outcome but do not fall for that trick, focus on becoming that type of person who achieves results.

We think that because we are a certain way, that is how we should be. This is false because identities are not set in stone, you get to have a choice in each and every moment. Make the right choice and your future self will thank you.
