My current read was How To win Friends and Influence People By Dale Carnegie.
I chose that book by then because I was really failing when it came to handling people.I would say things that were not really appropriate and then I would try to fix it but it always ended the wrong way.I know it really sucked!!!!
This book has amazing people skills. It gives you a wide scope of what really goes on a conversation, what the other person thinks and how to not wreak the conversation when you are treading on dangerous topics.
If you want to:
-become a better speaker,a more entertaining conversationalist
-handle complaints, avoid arguments ,keep your human contacts smooth and pleasant ,
then I really recommend this book for you.
Part one:Fundamental Techniques In Handling People
The first chapter is based on three simple principles:
1.Do not criticize,condemn or complain.
He explains that”Criticism is futile because it puts a person on the defensive and usually makes him strive to justify himself. It is also dangerous because it wounds a person’s precious pride ,hurts his sense of importance and arouses resentment.”He also quotes other people’s words like “Don’t criticize them;they are just what we would be under similar circumstances.”- Abraham Lincoln “I will speak ill of no man,he said, and speak all the good I know of everybody .”-Benjamin Franklin.
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain-and most fools do but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving.
Instead of condemning people,Let’s try to understand them. Let’s try to figure out why they do what they do.That’s more profitable and intriguing than criticism and it breeds sympathy, tolerance and kindness.”To know is to forgive all”
“God himself, sir, does not judge man until the end of his days.”
“Why should You and I ?”-Dr.Johnson
2.Give Honest and Sincere Appreciation.
He explains that”There is only one way under high heaven to get anybody to do anything ,and that is by making the other person want to do it.”
“Everything that You and I do springs from two motives:the sex urge and the desire to be great.
William James said”The deepest principle in human nature in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” keyword “craving.”
“The difference between appreciation and flattery is simple. One is sincere and the other is insincere, one comes from the heart ,the other comes form the teeth out.One is unselfish the other is selfish. One is universally admired the other universally condemned.”
“Use what language you will, you can never say anything but what you are.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson.
“Be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise,”and people will cherish your words and treasure them and repeat them over a lifetime-repeat them years after you have forgotten them.”
3.Arouse in the other person an eager want.
“The only way to influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it.”
“Action springs out of what we fundamentally desire…and the best piece of advice which can be given to would be persuaders ,whether in business,in home,in school,in politics,is:First arouse in the other person an eager want.He who does this has the whole world with him.He who cannot walks a lonely way.”-Harry A,over-street Influencing Human Behavior.
“If there is any one secret of success it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”-Henry Ford.
“People who can put themselves in the place of other people who can understand the workings of their minds, need never worry about what the future has in store for them.”Owen D.Young
That is just a scope of what the book is about.
